2012-2013 Kickoff!!!

We were so excited to kick off another year at Heartland MOMS! Your steering team has been working hard behind the scenes to plan a fun year for you! One big change this year is our name! Instead of calling ourselves Heartland MOPS we renamed our self Heartland MOMS to better reflect our group. We are for ALL moms with kids of ALL ages! Moms need friendships and support, not just during the baby and preschool years. We can't wait to see what this year has in store for our group!

Another change we decided to make this year was to eliminate the tables and small groups and instead spend time getting to know ALL of the moms at Heartland MOMS! With our theme this year emphasizing building relationships and community what better way to do that then to spend time getting to know all of the moms in our group!

We also enjoyed snacks provided by the Heartland MOMS steering team . Thank you, Jessica, for the gorgeous centerpiece!

We started our meeting by celebrating summer birthdays and welcoming the new babies to our group. Thanks again, Jessica, for the cute birthday gifts and baby hats, and thanks Maegan for the bows for the little girls!

MOMS Coordinator Lindsey kicked our meeting off on a great note. Thanks for all of your hard work, Lindsey, and for your passion to help all moms in our area make friendships and connections. And for looking hot while doing it! ;-)

After several rounds of some really fun ice breakers (thanks Gretchen and Maegan!) we gathered to work on a really fun craft- making t-shirt scarves!

Some of you ladies got very detailed and crafty with your creations. And some t-shirts flat out didn't work, but we all had fun talking, laughing, and creating!

We hope you all enjoyed our first meeting of the 2012-2013 Heartland MOMS. Come back next month for even more fun and chances to build friendships! And as always, bring a friend! Every mom is welcome!

Help Safe House For Women

For our first service project we would like to help out Safe House for Women in Cape Girardeau. The mission of Safe House for Women is to stop domestic violence and help survivors of domestic abuse regain a sense of their strength, power, and future. We want to show our support of their cause by donating items that can be used by the women and children residing in their shelter.

This is the most recent list of their needs. If you have any items you want to donate to Safe House please bring them to our first meeting on Monday, September 17th.

Carnival Fun!

Our kick off carnival was quite the success, despite the rainy weather! We had over 80 people attend our event, moms, dads, and kids. The moms and dads had a fun time meeting each other while the kids enjoyed running around, playing, and splashing in the puddles.

We had plenty of hot dogs, chips, and cupcakes to go around.

Then we got our sugar fix and enjoyed sno cones and cotton candy!

Thanks to Gretchen, Brian, and Travis, our talented cotton candy and sno cone makers!

Your Heartland MOMS 2012-2013 steering team (minus Maegan!). Gretchen, Miranda, Kimberly, Kendra, Lindsey, and Jessica.

We have had a lot of fun planning our kick-off carnival. And we have had even more fun planning out an awesome year for Heartland MOMS! Don't forget the first meeting on Monday, September 17th at 6:30 PM at CrossRoads Fellowship Church! We hope to see you all there!

Take the Plunge!

Are you ready to take the plunge? Coming in September we will be kicking off our 2012-2013 Heartland MOPS year!

Most of all, love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything. Be quick to give a meal to the hungry, a bed to the homeless - cheerfully. Be generous with the different things God gave you, passing them around so all get in on it: if words, let it be God’s words; if help, let it be God’s hearty help. That way, God’s bright presence will be evident in everything through Jesus, and he’ll get all the credit as the One mighty in everything-encores to the end of time. Oh yes! 1 Peter 4:8-11 (The Message)

The emphasis  for the 2012-2013 MOPS year is relationships and hope. MOPS communicates a message of hope and creates an atmosphere of supportive relationships that moms need to survive a world of constant change. Taking the plunge in relationships is being authentic and going deeper. In our MOPS group, relationships offer hope to moms, especially as we go deeper and take risks to create authentic community. All facets of relationships can be strengthened through taking risks, going deeper and showing authentic love – neighborhood, friendships, marriages, extended families, the world around us and ultimately relationship with God.

Butterfly Bombs

In our March meeting we made "Butterfly Bombs", fun ways to add color to your yard and garden! Here is the instruction taken from the Missouri Conservation Xplor Magazine:

Butterfly bombs are little balls made of soil, clay and wildflower seeds. You toss the bombs wherever you want a butterfly garden to grow. Rain will melt the clay and wash the seeds into the ground. In a few months, you’ll have an explosion of wildflowers perfect for any butterflies that flutter by.

Round Up These Ingredients

  • Powdered clay (available at most craft stores. Crayola's Air Dry clay will work as well)
  • Potting soil
  • Wildflower seeds (Make sure to choose wildflowers that are native to Missouri. The Grow Native! website can give you ideas for which seeds to use.)
  • Water

Get Your Hands Dirty

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine 5 parts powdered clay, 5 parts potting soil and 1 part wildflower seeds.
  2. Add a tiny bit of water. You'll need just enough to make a thick, clay-like dough. Don't add too much at first; you can always add more water later.
  3. Use your hands to roll the mixture into balls the size of large gum balls.
  4. Put your butterfly bombs on an old newspaper and let them harden in a cool, dry place for at least three days.
  5. Toss your butterfly bombs wherever you want flowers to grow.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Do you have a green thumb or a black one? Can you grow beautiful roses or can you even kill a cactus? At this month’s MOPS meeting we learned from Cape County Master Gardener Club member Elena Perryman how to beautify our homes and gardens with flowers and plants!

She demonstrated 2 ways to create container gardens, one type for flowers, and the other type for vegetables! Her main tip for creating container gardens were to choose plants that are THRILLERS, SPILLERS, and FILLERS for your pot. For more information on those plants check out this article. She also recommended that you fertilize your containers approximately every 10-15 days with a product such as Miracle Grow to ensure you have healthy and hardy plants. She cautioned us to not use compost or manure as these are "hot" fertilizers and can burn the roots of the plants. Also, be sure you choose plants that like the same type of sun! Read those plant labels and don't mix shade loving plants in your sunny container of sun loving plants! You can also visit these links to learn more about choosing the right flowers and vegetables for your containers.

Container flower and vegetable gardens are a perfect activity that both you and your kids can enjoy. Take advantage of this gorgeous spring weather and add a little beauty and color to your home, deck, and porches! Teach your children about where food comes from by growing your own little salad/taco/pizza garden!

Also, on Saturday, May 5th, from 9 AM to 3 PM, the Cape County Master Gardener's Club will be hosting a spring garden festival at the Conservation Pavilion in Arena park. They will be offering classes and demonstrations for adults and children on planting your own vegetable gardens, container gardens, how to choose flowers and plants, etc. This is a great time to get outdoors with your kids and help them develop their own green thumb.

Here are a few photo highlights from our March meeting.
